Off the Field: Tigerettes Earn Honors in Two Competitions

The Tigerettes dance team finished second in the Dance Precision category in their state competition, based on their videotaped performance with results released over the weekend. Originally, coach Kylie Mather said the plan was to submit a performance for the regional Sugar Bear Invitational, listen to critiques of the performance, and make improvements before submitting a new performance for state. The Tigerettes finished fourth in the 3A/4A Jazz category in the Sugar Bear Invitational. But “unfortunately, this all happened around the snowstorm, and ultimately we decided to submit our original video,” she said. That original video was good enough for second place at state among eight competitors in the 4A Dance Precision category. Sophomore Bryiar Callaway finished second at the Sugar Bear Invitational among sophomore solos, and took 15th at state. Abigail Thomasson was 5th among sophomore solos at the regional competition. “I think the main challenge this year compared to the past was pushing them to the next level, in the midst of quarantines. Since our team was mostly returners, we got to focus on expanding our technique instead of building that foundation,” said coach Andrea Sorrell. “However, with dancers gone due to being quarantined, it was difficult to stay consistent as a team.”
