Five Republic art portfolio students had pieces accepted into Drury University’s Best of the Midwest Art Show and displayed at First Friday Art Walk in Springfield. For most of them, it was the first time they’d seen their work hanging in a gallery — a step up from classroom critiques and late-night work sessions, and one they didn’t all expect to take this year.
Madeline Anderson submitted Anthems for a 17 Year Old Girl, tied to a portfolio about identity and change. “My portfolio was about growing up different and this one was about embracing and accepting who you are,” she said. The class heard the news together, and Anderson called it a moment she won’t forget. “It was so amazing, and I felt so proud to be a part of something… I have met some very talented people and it feels so nice to get artistic advice and encouragement.”
Jordyn Brucken opened an email before school telling her about her selection and said she needed a minute to process it. “I just sat there in shock,” she said. Later, standing in a gallery instead of a classroom, she felt the difference. “Having my piece displayed was so exciting but also nerve-wracking… It was such a rewarding experience and I’m very grateful for the opportunity.”
Two Sides, a portrait photography piece from Will Payne, came out of pushing himself into less comfortable work. “Working with those types of photos that I was less experienced with allowed me to start from a fresh perspective… I was able to make a piece I am proud to call my own,” he said. He didn’t expect to be chosen. “There are people far more talented than me… I was shocked to learn that I had landed a spot in the show.”
Nicole Allen submitted Silent Sorrows, built around expressions of sadness and connection. “Although everyone experiences sadness differently, we can all connect with these feelings,” she said. Seeing it displayed downtown stood out. “Witnessing my artwork on display was an incredible experience that felt almost surreal… It was a moment I had dreamed of, and being able to share it with others who appreciate art as much as I do was simply unforgettable.”
Aubrey Thrasher was also selected, rounding out the five who represented Republic at the regional show.
