Springfield Catholic controlled the run of play for most of the night Monday, handing Republic a 4-0 loss in Springfield and breaking the Lady Tigers’ three-match winning streak.

Republic (8-5) managed just a handful of chances all night against Catholic (10-2), which peppered the Republic goal with about 20 shots, more than half of them on target.

Goalkeeper Awbree Berning kept the Lady Tigers in it through the first half, making a string of saves — including a diving stop early and a kick save at point-blank range near the mid-point of the half — to keep the deficit at 1-0 going into halftime. Catholic had finally broken through late in the first half after Republic’s back line turned away several earlier chances.

The second half was a different story. Catholic found the net early, then scored again about a minute later to make it 3-0. Another goal late in the second half capped the scoring.

Republic remains winless all-time against Catholic, falling to 0-5 in the series.

The Lady Tigers return home Tuesday to host Central with a 6:45 p.m. start.
