Mabel Rogers and Savannah Bratten powered through the Joel Rios Girls Tournament with perfect records Saturday, leading Republic to a third-place team finish out of 21 schools. It’s the first time Republic’s girls have won a team tournament trophy.
“I’m really proud of our girls for bringing home the first team trophy in program history,” coach Eric Noland said. “It is a testament to the hard work and time that they have invested in the sport, and I believe that it is just the beginning of the success that this program will enjoy.”
Rogers and Bratten both finished 5-0 in winning their brackets. Seven different Lady Tigers won at least three matches.
Rogers dominated the 115-pound division, scoring bonus points in all five of her victories. She won the semifinal and finals matches by a combined score of 39-5, earning technical falls in both.
At 125 pounds, Bratten pinned every opponent she faced. Her day included a 53-second fall over Dillan Piersel of Park Hill South and a first-period pin of Basehor-Linwood’s Payton Charles in the semifinals. Bratten also secured a fall against Elizabeth Miller (Olathe South) in the championship.
Rachel Clark (100) and Chloe Simpson (145) each finished 4-1, earning runner-up finishes in their respective brackets. Millie Waterman was 3-1 on her way to a second-place finish.
Clark posted two major decisions on her way to the finals, where she suffered her only loss to Basehor-Linwood’s Lydia Robinette, 3-0.
Simpson pinned four of her five opponents, all of them in the first round. She lost to Audrey Lennard by tech fall in the championship match.
Waterman led her championship match 3-2 when she was pinned by Abigail Monaco, dropping her to second place after three quick pins to work through the bracket.
Gabby Shanks (135) also went 3-1 with three pins, the fastest a 15-second stop of Olathe East’s Brianna Monzalvo Rangel. She finished third. Aara Shade (170) added a 3-1 performance with two pins and a 6-0 decision over Olathe North’s Zjedai Royal Bey to place fifth.
Bre-Elle Gutierrez (105) finished fourth, going 3-2 on the day. Sakura Wilcutt (6th, 110), and Anna McBroom (7th, 155) each picked up two wins for Republic.
Republic finished with 27 total pins as a team.
