Rogers Stays Unbeaten, Montiel Takes 2nd at ‘Bring the Hammer’

The Republic wrestling teams traveled to Cabot, Arkansas, for the “Bring the Hammer” tournament, returning with a bracket champion, a runner-up, and multiple top-five finishes. Mabel Rogers led the Lady Tigers with a first-place finish, while Ethan Montiel reached the finals to pace the boys team.

Girls Wrestling

Rogers captured the championship at 115 pounds, finishing the tournament with a perfect 8-0 record. She wrestled six matches—receiving two byes—and scored bonus points in all of them, recording four pins and two technical falls.

Millie Waterman finished third at 120 pounds, ending the tournament with an 8-1 record. Waterman did not receive a bye, wrestling nine times and winning eight. Every one of her victories came by fall, accounting for a significant portion of the team’s pin total. As a group, the Lady Tigers recorded 30 pins, which represented 79 percent of their wrestled victories.

Bre-Elle Gutierrez also placed third, competing at 110 pounds. Gutierrez finished 8-1 overall and 6-1 in wrestled matches. She scored points through a mix of outcomes, logging three pins, a major decision, and two decisions.

At 135 pounds, Gabby Shanks earned a fourth-place finish. She went 7-2 overall with six pins, securing all her victories by fall. Rachel Clark added a fourth-place finish at 105 pounds, going 6-3 with a pin, a technical fall, and a decision. Aara Shade placed fifth at 170 pounds, winning four wrestled matches and finishing 6-3 overall.

Boys Wrestling

Ethan Montiel turned in the top performance for the boys squad, placing second at 215 pounds. Montiel went 7-1, earning his spot in the finals with a dominant run that included three pins and three technical falls. In the championship match, he lost a narrow 9-8 decision to John Burke of Arlington.

Kameron Sutton finished fourth at 165 pounds. Sutton posted a 7-2 record, scoring for the Tigers with results that included two pins, a technical fall, two major decisions, and a decision win.

Bentley Packwood placed seventh at 126 pounds. He finished 6-2 overall, securing three pins and two decisions.

Republic’s boys team finished with a 51-31 combined record, picking up 22 pins and six technical falls throughout the tournament.
