Carthage controlled the line of scrimmage from the opening quarter, and Republic never fully swung the momentum back in a 31–14 loss in the district championship Friday on the road. Carthage stayed in a double-tight, power look most of the night, piling up inside yards and limiting Republic’s ability to answer.

Carthage struck first on a short pass from Zane Browning to Landon Bland midway through the first quarter. The extra point was no good, leaving Carthage ahead 6–0. Republic answered with its best early scoring opportunity. Preston McCracken broke loose for 41 yards to set up first-and-goal at the four, and the Tigers pushed it inside the one yard line on a run by Izaiah Hull before the ball came loose and Carthage recovered in the end zone.

Republic’s defense followed with a critical stop, forcing a punt and keeping the Tigers within reach. They finally broke through late in the half. A 13-play, run-heavy march ended when Matthew Pelfrey scored from two yards out with 2:35 left, giving Republic a 7–6 halftime lead. Even with the advantage, the physical play of Carthage up front was the defining theme of the first two quarters — and it carried through the rest of the night.

The key sequence came on Carthage’s first drive of the second half. Republic had forced what would have been 3rd-and-long near midfield, but a late hit out of bounds extended the drive. Carthage took advantage and pushed the ball inside the 15, then finished the possession with an 11-yard touchdown run. A two-point conversion made it 14–7.

On the ensuing kickoff, Republic failed to secure the ball, and Carthage recovered at the 14. Three plays later, another touchdown stretched the lead to 21–7. A field goal late in the third quarter widened it to 24–7.

“That’s a… 14-point swing,” coach Ryan Cornelsen said. “We just couldn’t overcome it.”

Cornelsen said Carthage’s commitment to its heavy-set run game dictated the night. “They went to a power set, double tight with an H-back. And we felt like that was probably what they were going to come with,” he said. “And we just didn’t have enough beef in the middle to hold up. They were just able to hit that up the gut and get to our backers really fast with that H.”

Republic pulled within 24–14 midway through the fourth quarter after a 19-play drive built on tough carries from Hull and key catches by Owen Klier. Pelfrey scored from one yard out with 6:47 remaining. Carthage answered with one final touchdown in the closing minute.

Cornelsen said his team never quite found a consistent answer. “They were able to move the ball in that set on us pretty good,” he said. “We couldn’t quite figure out what would stop it or what changes to make to shut it down. Then we would stop it for a while and they’d come back and they’d find it again.”

Offensively, Republic had trouble gaining momentum. “They obviously had the Preston stuff pegged pretty well,” Cornelsen said. “We were moving the ball on some of the dive and those things… We had some passes that were there and we overshot it, and we needed some of those things to happen for us to get the momentum going,” he said. “We just fell short.”

Republic managed only 236 total yards on offense, and only 193 rushing yards. Carthage gained 291 total yards, including 240 on the ground.

Still, Cornelsen praised the effort. “I know our kids played hard and we fought. (I’m) proud of them,” he said. “It’s tough to go through all that they went through — through the summer and everything — then come to a district championship and get beat. That’s never easy.”

Republic finished 9–3. Two of their three losses were to Carthage (Class 5 #2) and the other was to Nixa (Class 6 #3). The Tigers scored 504 points, setting a new single-season program record, and their 31 wins over the past three seasons tied the highest three-year total in program history.
