When Lee Dishman took over the Republic softball program 14 years ago, he described his coaching philosophy in simple terms: “Hard-nosed, hustle-everywhere-you-go, 100%-all-the-time.” His Lady Tigers have lived up to that standard ever since.
Dishman’s teams became known for their energy and relentlessness, averaging 19 wins a season and earning five 20-win campaigns during his tenure. His record at Republic stands at 269–133 (.669), part of a 336–192 career mark that includes five seasons at Hillcrest.

But Dishman downplays the numbers.
“As you know, those are not my wins but the players’ wins,” he said. “I just write out a lineup card.”
Tonight marks Dishman’s final scheduled home game as Republic’s coach. And as the team continues its push toward the postseason, Dishman will close this chapter the same way he’s lived it—alongside his daughter, senior pitcher Piper Dishman.
“I love that kid,” he said. “She’s been through every injury imaginable in her high school career and she’s ready to hang up the cleats. And we’re gonna go out together. I don’t know how many pitches I’ve watched her throw and I don’t know how many at-bats I’ve watched her hit, but every one, I’ve been very proud of her.”
Piper has been part of the Republic program for as long as she can remember, growing up on the same field where her dad built the program’s hard-nosed identity. This fall, she’s finishing her own journey on that field, wearing the same uniform he’s coached in for more than a decade.
“I’ve been looking forward to it all season,” Piper said after Senior Night a couple of weeks ago. “I’m really happy that we’re going out together. So in a way, I think it’s his senior night as well. It’s a very special thing that we are going out together, and I don’t think I’m ready for it to be over just quite yet.”
Piper has decided not to continue playing after this season, saying the toll of injuries made the decision clear. For both father and daughter, that makes these last few games even more meaningful.
Republic will host Parkview tonight, then jump into district play at Ozark. The Lady Tigers, seeded third, open with a game against sixth-seeded Branson on October 16.
The team—including his daughter—has a chance to extend the season a little longer and give Dishman another 20-win season and one more run through the postseason, built on the same hustle and effort that have defined his 14 years at Republic.
