Brown’s 4th-Quarter Burst Boosts Republic Past Glendale

Addie Brown’s memory of a shooter’s credo – “Good shooters should never miss twice” – paid off in the fourth quarter Monday night. Brown shook off early misses to score all 10 of her points in the final period, leading Republic past Glendale on the road, 50-45.

Brown helped Republic overcome a six-point deficit to start the fourth quarter.

“I was just trying to make sure I was able to make that adjustment, and it started rolling for me,” Brown said.

Republic had struggled to score all night, managing just one field goal in the first quarter. After trailing 14-9 in the second quarter, the Lady Tigers scored 12 straight points to take a 21-14 lead, but Glendale cut the lead to three at halftime.

Glendale (8-11) closed the third quarter with a 12-2 run to take a six-point lead into the fourth quarter, when Brown began connecting.

“She came up big for us,” coach Tori Mooneyham said. “When you’ve got a team with as much depth as we do, it’s nice to have a kid come off the bench and be able to do that.”

Brown, who’d been battling illness, said her early misses came from not using her legs enough on her shot.

“Throughout the game I was having trouble hitting my shots, and that’s kind of my job on the team,” she said. “I knew I just needed to keep shooting, and once I kept shooting it started to fall. I needed to try to stay confident, even though it’s kind of hard to keep shooting when you keep missing.”

Cora Cutbirth led Republic with 14 points. Megan Wade led Glendale with 13 points.

Republic (11-8) has won 11 of its last 14 games. The Lady Tigers host Webb City in a COC West matchup Thursday.
