The soccer Lady Tigers kept their historic win streak alive, notching their 10th straight victory on Friday afternoon against Capital City High School at the Jefferson City Shootout. The Lady Tigers scored two second-half goals to put away the Cavaliers and break the school record for consecutive wins.
The teams played a scoreless first half marked by physical play from both sides. Republic possessed the ball well, but failed to put it into the net until midway through the second half.
The Lady Tigers broke through with just over 19 minutes remaining in the game. Molly Blades fed Claire Redman on the right wing. Redman cut toward the goal into an open space and fired the ball past the Cavalier goalkeeper to make the score 1-0.
Capital City had good opportunities to even the score, but solid play by Republic’s backline and goalkeeper Awbree Berning maintained the lead. With 3:10 left, Cadence Lugar took a shot in the middle, and it rebounded off the goalkeeper. Emma Hoodenpyle crashed in from the left side of the box and put the ball away to give Republic a 2-0 lead. It was Hoodenpyle’s first-ever varsity goal, and it all-but-iced the match for the Lady Tigers.
Capital City is the only team to be a two-time victim of Republic’s hot streak. The Lady Tigers won a much different game against the Cavaliers on April 20, topping Capital City 7-4 at home.
During the winning streak, Republic has outscored its opponents by a combined score of 43-7. The 10 wins include seven shutouts.
In addition to running Republic’s winning streak to 10, the 2-0 decision marks the 10th shutout of the season. The school record in that category is 12, set in 2015.
Republic improves to 14-4. Last time the Lady Tigers had more than 14 wins in a season was in 2019, when they finished with a record of 16-9.
