Lady Tigers Celebrate Fifth Straight Win

Republic soccer continued its winning ways with a 4-0 victory over Harrison, Ark. in the Kickapoo Shootout Friday night, extending their streak to five consecutive wins as the team discovers its rhythm.

Coach Jesus Zuniga points to his team’s improved decision-making as a key factor in their recent success.

“We moved the ball well and have been better on picking and choosing our moments, not forcing things to happen, letting the game come to us,” Zuniga said.

The many options for scoring have sometimes made it difficult for Republic to settle into a groove. “Different people being able to step up when we need them has been the reason it’s been difficult to find the right recipe for success. Several great ingredients to pick from, (we) just don’t know what we are trying to ‘cook’ on any given night.”

The balanced attack was on display as four different players scored for Republic. Cadence Lugar opened the scoring with 27 minutes left in the first half, firing a shot from the right side that ricocheted off the left post and in. Kaylee Cornelsen provided the assist.

Claire Redman doubled the lead on a set piece assisted by Lugar before halftime, arcing a precise 30-yard shot over the goalkeeper.

In the second half, Lugar collected her second assist when she fed Adison Gibbs, who sprinted through the defense and finished from a severe angle. Bria Claxton capped the scoring in the final 10 minutes with a 25-yard curling shot off an assist from Gibbs.

Zuniga was especially impressed by his team’s reaction to each goal. “The celebration and excitement of the players for each other gives me chills,” he said. “(That’s) what I always wanted in a program, and to see it happen today was perfect going into Easter and opening up divisional conference play.”

Zuniga emphasized simplicity and enjoyment at halftime. “I told them we are playing a child’s game, so have fun,” he said. “Remember to find the joy in the game and play simple and don’t over-complicate a child’s game.”

With the win, Republic improved to 8-5 on the season.
