Republic wrestler Connor Sandridge (40-5) will return home from the state wrestling championships with a medal. The only question is which one. After losing his state quarterfinal match to Hayden Trezek of Francis Howell, Sandridge powered his way through wrestlebacks, pinning two opponents to make it into the medal rounds scheduled for Saturday.
Sandridge lost to Trezek in the third round, but rebounded to knock off Jason Briones of Liberty, pinning him in just 49 seconds. He followed that up with a pin of Ethan Wasson of Timberland. That sets up a match with David Brooks (38-6) of Staley. The winner will wrestle for third place in the Class 4 170-pound bracket. The loser will wrestle for fifth. Either way, Sandridge is guaranteed a medal.
Republic’s two other competitors, Phillip George and Maddox Wilkins, have both been eliminated from contention.
