Two unfilled weight classes tipped the balance toward Waynesville in a season-opening loss for Republic on the road Tuesday, 46-29. The two teams split their 12 contested matches 6-6, with Waynesville outscoring Republic 34-29 in those matches. But Waynesville received six points each for the two open weight classes, putting the decision out of reach for Republic.
Republic opened strong, with wins by Wyatt George, Dominick Famiano, Gabe Hesington, Isaiah Madson, and Jonathan O’Connell in the first five matches of the night. But Waynesville dominated the upper weight classes, winning six of the last seven to edge Republic. Above O’Connell’s 145-pound weight, Republic’s only win belonged to John Hickman, who won a decision at 182.
