Photos: Football Jamboree

The football Tigers edged closer to their season opener with their appearance at the preseason jamboree at Springfield Parkview. Coach Dustin Baldwin says he didn’t see any big surprises out of his team’s first inter-squad action.

“We rotated a ton of guys, so it’s hard to have continuity. I thought the varsity guys did just fine. We ran the ball really nice, especially with the older guys, which is what we wanted to see,” he says. The Tigers’ offensive players were entirely scripted ahead of time. Two turnovers and several penalties, especially among the younger players, cost Republic the chance to score several times.

“The younger guys kind of came in and looked a little like a deer in headlights, and that’s part of it. They’ve got to learn, so it’s a good experience for them,” Baldwin says.

The Republic defense shut out Parkview and Willard — and barely gave up any positive yardage to Parkview at all, over 12 plays — before allowing two touchdowns in the last game against Cassville.
