Republic Athletes Shine, but Injury Dampens SBU Invitational

Several Tigers and Lady Tigers turned in personal bests at the Southwest Baptist University High School Invitational in Bolivar. But the success was dampened by an injury to one of Republic’s best athletes, Brooke Stanfield.

The Tigers finished 8th out of more than 30 teams, led by Jerney Jones with two top-three finishes. Jones finished second in the long jump with a distance of 20’11″. He also finished 3rd in the 100m dash (2nd in the large-school division) with a time of 11.31 in the finals.

Junior pole vaulter Haven Lander turned in one of the highlight performances, clearing 11’6“ for the first time and breaking her own school record. She finished second. Mariah Stanfield tied for 6th with a vault of 9’6”.

But the Lady Tigers (who finished 19th) suffered a blow when all-state senior Brooke Stanfield suffered a possibly season-ending injury. Stanfield pulled up short while anchoring the 4x100m relay and appears to be done for the year.

Before her injury, Stanfield helped the 4x200m relay finish 7th. That team also includes Autumn Garner, Lander, and Avy Powell-Qualo.

Republic’s 4x100m relay team of Destin Owen, Riley Watkins, Thomas Brewer, and Jerney Jones finished 8th.

Jack Hayes finished fourth in the discus with a toss 134’1″.

Treydon Rackley finished sixth in the 1600m run with a time of 4:36.33. He also finished fifth in the 800m run at 2:02.40.
