In addition to our usual coverage, I’ll keep this post open with updates throughout the MSHSAA girls and boys wrestling tournaments. Republic qualified eight wrestlers in all. Check back often because this is where updates will be posted.
Day Two

The Lady Tigers finish with a 1st, and 2nd, and a 4th. Mabel Rogers won the program’s first state title. Millie Waterman finished second in her bracket, and Savannah Bratten took fourth.

Republic’s girls currently stand at 9th overall in team points, looking for a top-10 finish for the first time.

Keaton Overcast finishes 5th, improving on his performance from last season, when he placed 6th.

Savannah Bratten finishes in 4th place as a freshman. She dropped her 3rd-place match and will be on the medal stand later tonight.

Republic will bring home four medals from this year’s state championship — three in the girls tournament and one in the boys tournament. Keaton Overcast will wrestle for fifth place.

Keaton Overcast lost his wrestleback match to returning state runner-up Quincey Crawford of Hickman. Overcast will wrestle for fifth place later.

Ethan Montiel drops his third-round wrestleback match, ending a great junior season.

Keaton Overcast stays in the medal hunt. He knocked off Teagon Patterson of Ozark to move into the consolation semifinals.

Republic has two state finalists! Mabel Rogers and Millie Waterman each won their semifinal and will wrestle for a state championship later today. Savannah Bratten lost a one-point heartbreaker in her semifinal and falls into wrestlebacks. Gabby Shanks lost her wrestleback match 3-0 and is eliminated.
Bratten will wrestle again during this session. Rogers and Waterman will wrestle later today.

Boys Class 4 – Round Two Wrestlebacks
10:00 pm Ethan Montiel is also through to the second day! He defeated Kaleb Belcher to advance.
9:40 Keaton Overcast stays alive with a tech fall over Boyer Ward of Kansas City St. Pius X. He’ll be back for Saturday.

Ethan Montiel loses his semifinal to Trey Craig of CBC by tech fall. He will join Overcast in wrestlebacks and wrestle again later tonight.

Keaton Overcast (31-2) loses his quarterfinal by tech fall to Roman Stewart of Liberty (30-4). He drops into wrestlebacks and will wrestle again later tonight.
Boys Class 4 – Round One
7:10 pm
Two matches, two wins for Republic. Keaton Overcast turned in a 23-3 tech fall in round one, defeating Elijah Woods of Seckman. Overcast will meet Roman Stewart of Liberty in the quarterfinals.
Ethan Montiel earned his first-ever state win with a pin of Christopher Henry in the second round. He was leading 19-6 when he put Henry away to close the match. Trey Craig of CBC is Montiel’s next opponent.

End of Day 1 for the Class 2 girls: Four wrestlers are still alive, including three with title hopes. Mabel Rogers, Millie Waterman, and Savannah Bratten are in the semifinals. Gabby Shanks is alive in wrestlebacks when action resumes Saturday morning.
Girls Class 2 – 2nd Round Wrestlebacks
Gabby Shanks wins her 2nd-round wrestleback to stay alive for Day 2 of the state tournament.
Aara Shade loses a heartbreaker after tying the score with five seconds left in the third round, she loses in overtime.

Aara Shade wins her 1st-round wrestleback to advance. Five Lady Tigers are still alive through two rounds of wrestling, another new program best. Three are semifinalists and will wrestle again tomorrow for a spot in the championship—Mabel Rogers, Millie Waterman, and Savannah Bratten.

Girls Class 2 – Quarterfinals and Wrestlebacks Round 1
Gabby Shanks drops her quarterfinal match and will compete in wrestlebacks. She was pinned in the first round.

Ten minutes ago, Republic had never put a girls wrestler into the state semifinals. Now the Lady Tigers have three. Mabel Rogers, Millie Waterman and Savannah Bratten each won their quarterfinal bouts in quick succession Friday to advance to the Class 2 state semifinals.
Gabby Shanks is up next with a chance to make it four.
Girls Class 2 – Round One
Aara Shade (Sr.) loses a tough 3-1 decision to Ava Purvis of Jefferson City. A misstep in the first period led to a three-point takedown for Purvis and she was able to hold off Shade the rest of the way.
Gabby Shanks (Jr.) turns a back-and-forth first round to her favor, pinning Katharine Tyson of North Point at 2:31 to close out a win.
Savannah Bratten (Fr.) pins Amara Vanderhoof of Eureka at 3:35, building a 9-0 lead with a first-period takedown and nearfall before finishing in the second.
Millie Waterman (Sr.) grinds out a 4-1 decision over Ulalia Butler of Raytown. A scoreless first period gave way to a third-period nearfall allowed Waterman to come from behind and advance.
Mabel Rogers (Fr.) opens with a tech fall, beating Lillie Morningstar of Jackson 18-3 in 4:23. Rogers scored takedowns in both periods and added a nearfall in the second.
