Last March, Savannah Bratten and Mabel Rogers were eighth graders winning MOUSA state championships. On Saturday, as Republic freshmen competing against sophomores, juniors, and seniors, they were district champions.
Bratten and Rogers each won Class 2 District 3 titles — Bratten at 125 pounds and Rogers at 115 — helping Republic send a program-record six girls to the state tournament. Neither wrestler allowed a single point in any of their district matches.
Bratten received a first-round bye, then pinned her way through the bracket — beating Belton’s Abigail Hayes in 1:47, Willard’s Neela Motlagh in 2:43, and Ozark’s Hannah Maskrod in 4:23 in the championship match.
After a first-round bye, Rogers tech-falled Rolla’s Andrea Brown 15-0 in 1:04, then pinned Smith-Cotton’s Katherine Madrid in 1:19 and Branson’s Alyssa Salemie in 2:44 to win the title.
Combined, the two freshmen went 6-0 at districts with six bonus-point victories and zero points allowed. Their district championships, one year after winning middle school state titles, are our Performance of the Week.
