Two Republic wrestlers punched through to the district semifinals Friday night, while several others kept their state hopes alive heading into a full day of wrestlebacks Saturday at the Class 4 District 3 tournament in Joplin.

Keaton Overcast and Ethan Montiel each won twice by fall to reach the semifinal round, putting themselves one win from a state berth.

Overcast (29-1) at 144 pounds needed just 1:31 to pin Joplin’s Kemper Loyd in the first round, then pinned Nixa’s Alton Novinger in 2:00 in the quarterfinals. Montiel (34-6) at 190 followed a similar path, pinning Joplin’s Judah Meredith in 4:45 before finishing Carthage’s Steve Serious in 2:39.

Three other Tigers won at least once Friday and will wrestle through the consolation bracket Saturday. At 157, Kaiden Patterson opened with a pin of Glendale’s Denzel Washington in just 27 seconds before falling to Waynesville’s Carson Sutphin in the quarterfinals. Brennan Bird (285) also won his opener by fall in 57 seconds over Neosho’s Jackson Schofield before a quarterfinal loss to Ozark’s Isaiah Collins.

Shelby Horton (132) dropped his opening match but bounced back with a 36-second pin in the consolation round. Abel Shade (150) also split, falling in the first round before pinning Carthage’s Dylan Evans in consolation. Kameron Sutton (165) won his opener by tech fall over Kickapoo’s Andrew Tofflemire before a 6-3 quarterfinal loss to Lee’s Summit North’s Ben Wirth. Izaiah Hull (175) lost his opener but received a consolation-round bye and will continue Saturday.

Aydan Walker (106), Bentley Packwood (126), and Isaac Crowley (138) were each eliminated after two losses.

Overcast and Montiel will wrestle in the semifinals with a state trip on the line. Patterson, Bird, Horton, Shade, Sutton, and Hull will all need to win through the consolation bracket to keep their seasons going.
