Two performances earned special recognition in Republic athletics this past week — one for high school and one for middle school.

Reese Finley broke a 12-year-old school record in the 400-meter dash in her first meet of the season after recovering from an injury, highlighting Republic’s performance at the Christian County Relays in Nixa on Friday. Finley broke Brooke Stanfield’s 2013 record of 58.91 seconds, finishing with a time of 58.42 seconds to take first place in the event.

The record-breaking performance comes in Finley’s return to competition following an injury layoff, making the achievement even more impressive.

At the middle school level, Republic’s Chloe Simpson delivered a remarkable offensive performance in a 10-0 win against Joplin. Simpson went 2-for-2 with both a grand slam and a three-run home run, driving in seven runs total in the shutout victory.

Simpson’s pair of homers provided all the offense RMS needed, as her seven RBIs accounted for 70 percent of the team’s runs in the dominant win. Her perfect day at the plate helped Republic cruise to victory.
