Millie Waterman’s season ended with two losses at the Class 2 state wrestling tournament in Columbia, but not before she made history as Republic’s first female wrestler to qualify for state. The junior finished her campaign with a 35-13 record.

In the championship first round, Waterman faced Francis Howell’s Kenadee McDowell (49-2), falling in 1:06. She then moved to the consolation bracket where North Kansas City’s Jennifer Lopez-Alvarado (38-12) won by fall in 3:38.
Though Waterman didn’t advance further, her qualification represented a breakthrough for Republic wrestling. As a junior, she’ll have another opportunity to return to the state tournament next season.
