Dramatic Improvement Lifts Republic to 6th at Pearson Invitational

The Republic girls golf team slashed 28 strokes off its team score in just one week, capping the improvement with its best performance in years at the Pearson Invitational in Springfield Monday.

Republic finished third at the Willard Invitational last week. At Pearson, played at Horton Smith Golf Course, the Lady Tigers took sixth place with a team score of 376. It’s the team’s lowest total in several seasons and its best finish at Pearson since 2018.

Izzy Benson led Republic with an 88. Jenna Smith shot 92, while Stephanie David and Mylee Ramsey each carded 98. London Crawford rounded out the scoring with 114.

Coach Curt Plotner said the performance shows the team’s potential as the postseason approaches.

“I think today showed what we are capable of,” Plotner said. “We are trending the right direction going into the postseason, and the girls have been working really hard on their game. We are excited to compete at the conference and district tournament.”

No Republic golfers earned an individual medals at the tournament. Benson’s 88 put her in a tie for 16th, one stroke over the medal cutoff.
