Branson Outplays Republic in COC Tennis Battle

The Republic tennis team lost 9-0 to Branson on Thursday, facing tough competition across the lineup.

In the varsity doubles matches, the No. 1 team of Gavin Collyott and Andrew McCord lost 5-8 to Branson’s top duo of Benjamin Merrifield and Tyler Borger. The No. 2 doubles team of Cooper Choate and Nathan Henry also lost 5-8, while the No. 3 team of Boston Henry and Elijah Kennard fell 1-8.

With a 3-0 lead after doubles was complete, Branson closed out the sweep in singles play.

“Our guys competed pretty well up and down the lineup, but were frankly just outplayed by some really good players,” said Republic coach David Smashey. “Gavin Collyott and Andrew McCord played especially well but were up against one of the best doubles teams in the area. As a coach, you can’t really complain when your guys are playing hard and thoughtfully, but just getting beaten when the other kids hit great shots.”

In junior varsity action, the Tigers narrowly lost to Branson 5-6.

The Tigers will look to rebound in their next match tonight at home against Glendale.
