Varsity Tennis Bounces Back; JV Wins Lebanon Tourney

Republic’s tennis team bounced back from a loss at Branson on Tuesday with a 7-2 victory over Glendale High School at home on Wednesday.

The Tigers claimed wins in both doubles and singles play. Gavin Collyott and Andrew McCord secured a crucial 8-5 win in the No. 2 doubles match, while Cooper Davis and Austin Hardcastle won the No. 3 doubles match 8-1. In singles play, Republic won five out of six matches.

“Solid team win,” said Coach David Smashey. “It’s great to see our guys bounce back immediately from a tough loss yesterday and play really good tennis. The No. 2 doubles match was really key — it was back and forth from the beginning, then at five-all, Gavin and Andrew put together their best stretch of tennis and pulled away for the 8-5 win. In singles, I thought our numbers 4, 5, and 6 really showed their quality and put the match away for us.”

The Republic junior varsity team also had a successful outing Wednesday, winning the Lebanon JV Tournament for at least the sixth consecutive year. The JV squad won all three matches, defeating Lebanon 9-0, Rolla 6-3, and Waynesville 7-2.

“This is a great tournament where the JV gets to play the six singles, three doubles format of a varsity match,” Smashey said. “So many of our players over the years have taken big steps toward eventual varsity success in this tournament, and I’m confident this year’s JV team will be winning a lot of varsity matches in the years to come.”
