Two Republic Wrestlers Still Alive at State Championships

Two of Republic’s three wrestlers are still alive at the Class 4 state wrestling tournament in Columbia.

Connor Sandridge advanced to the quarterfinals at 170, beating Cory Burris of Fox with a pin late in the first round of their opening match. Sandridge is now 39-4, and will face Hayden Trezek (33-5) of Francis Howell in the quarterfinals.

Phillip George has started working his way through wrestlebacks after suffering a close loss in his first match at 106. George lost a 9-8 decision to Erik Egstad of Park Hill. He rebounded to beat Gannon Kuhn of Timberland in his first consolation match. In his next match, he’ll meet the loser of the quarterfinal between Devon Harrison of Liberty and Jackson Tenny of Lafayette.

Maddox Wilkins, who fought through the consolation bracket at districts to earn a state berth, has been eliminated at 152. He lost his opener to Aiden Hernandez (44-1) of Francis Howell Central, then lost to Ethan Vande Ven of Park Hill in a consolation match.
