Marco Donjuan leaps over the Waynesville goalkeeper in the first half. He scored four goals in Republic’s season opener.

Republic Whips Waynesville in High-Scoring Opener

After a couple of seasons in which goals were hard to come by, the Republic soccer offense is off to a high-flying start. The Tigers hung five goals on Waynesville in a 5-3 win to open their 2021 schedule.

Marco Donjuan scored four goals to lead Republic. Jabali Wanekaya also scored a goal. Both Markus Mitchell and freshman Diego Zuniga added assists for the Tigers.

“I thought the first half, we had some mistakes from first-year varsity players. Second half, we settled in and those young players stepped up and played great,” said coach Kevin Hauck. “Diego looked like a veteran in the second half. I thought defensively, we cleaned it up and looked more organized.”

Republic is 1-0, and they will host Ozark next, on August 31.

FARR BETTER PLAYER OF THE GAME

Marco Donjuan wasted no time in continuing his role as a vital scorer for the Tigers. Donjuan, playing up top in the Republic formation, took advantage of his opportunities and scored a hat trick plus one. His four-goal performance led Republic to a win in its first game, and made him our Farr Better Player of the Game.
