Republic Golfers Fight Weather to Finish in Top Half on Day One

Both Clara Fronabarger and Regan Holmes finished in the top half of the field at the Class 3 state golf tournament at Twin Hills Golf & Country Club in Joplin today. Fronabarger turned in a score of 92 and Holmes a 95 through the midway point of the two-day tournament.

The best scores of the day belonged to Isabelle Thrall of Rockwood Summit and Grace Claney of Ladue Horton Watkins, who both shot eight-over-par 80.

“The conditions made it rough, but it was rough for everybody,” said Holmes. “I definitely didn’t settle in at all today. I was all over the place.”

Fronabarger agreed that the cold and wet conditions made play difficult. “Because it was cold, I had to wear more layers and my gloves were wet, and it just made playing more uncomfortable.”

Fronabarger’s score ties her for 21st, and Holmes is tied for 31st. Fronabarger is just two strokes behind the cutoff for all-state recognition.

“I’m really excited, because I definitely could have cut some strokes today, and got my stride for tomorrow,” she said.

Holmes said her goal for day two is “to hit it straight and just be more consistent. Sometimes I need to get out of my own head and not get so frustrated – focus on one hole at a time.”

Holmes is scheduled to tee off at 9:33 a.m., and Fronabarger at 10:00 tomorrow.
