Free Throws Key Ingredient in Host Chanute’s Win

Chanute made 15 free throws in the final eight minutes to edge Republic in double overtime on its home floor in the third place game of the Ralph Miller Classic, 70-65.

The biggest free throws of the night came at the end of the first overtime, with Republic leading 62-59. To stop Chanute from making a game-tying three-pointer, they opted to foul Corbett Kimberlin as he crossed half court. As Race Looney reached in to foul and the whistle blew, Kimberlin made a motion as if he were shooting a half-court shot with more than two seconds remaining. Officials called a shooting foul and awarded him three free throws. He made them to force the second overtime.

Kimberlin’s big night at the free throw line continued in the second overtime, after officials whistled Jaden Duvall for his fifth foul. Duvall was one of four Republic players to foul out, and waved his hand in disgust as he walked off–prompting a technical foul. Kimberlin made three of four free throws and Chanute got the ball out of bounds, putting them in control and setting up their win.

Broc Smith led Republic with 25 points despite playing limited minutes because of foul trouble. He joined Duvall, Race Looney, and Cole Buxton in fouling out.

Neither team led by more than five points all night. The score was tied 12-12 after one quarter, and Chanute led 25-23 at halftime. The Blue Comets led 38-36 going into the fourth quarter, and it was tied 51-51 at the end of regulation.

Republic falls to 13-5 after two straight losses to close out the tournament.
