Defense Earns Tournament Championship for Lady Tigers

The Lady Tigers capped their weekend with a championship in the Stephanie Phillips Classic in Springfield. Republic clinched the title with a 50-37 win over Hartville Saturday.

Halli Bartelsmeyer led the Lady Tigers with 13 points, and in the process, she earned tournament MVP honors. Avylina Powell-Qualo scored 12. She was also named to the all-tournament team.

Republic’s guard-heavy lineup managed to win convincingly without lighting up the scoreboard from beyond the three-point arc. The Lady Tigers made only two three-pointers all night, one by Clara Fronabarger and one by Jade Kirby.

It was again the defense that played the biggest role in Republic’s success, as it had been during two previous tournament wins. The Lady Tigers held Hartville to just six points in the second quarter in building a 25-17 halftime lead. In the second half, Hartville made just four field goals.

For Republic, it’s the third straight victory after opening the season 0-2. The 3-2 Lady Tigers will have the week off and play at Kickapoo next Monday.Find out how you can get $25 worth of free photos as a subscriber to Republic Tiger Sports magazine. Sign up now, before this offer runs out!
