The Republic Lady Tigers turned a potential blowout into a close game early in the third quarter, before Kickapoo turned on the jets and pulled away again in a 63-46 victory at Republic Monday night.
Republic trailed 36-27 at halftime, and came out of the locker room with renewed energy, slashing the Lady Chiefs’ lead to 38-34. But Kickapoo responded with a 20-3 run that lasted through the first two minutes of the fourth quarter and cruised from there. The lead eventually stretched over 20 points before Republic’s reserves closed the gap in the final minutes.
“We came out and we showed a little life, especially defensively. We were getting some 50/50 balls and limiting them to one shot, and I thought we were a little more aggressive offensively,” says coach Kris Flood. “We just got to about the two and a half minute mark and the wheels came off. It went from four to double digits pretty quick, and then all of a sudden, we’re trying to maybe do some stuff that we just totally got away from.”
Megan Branstetter scored 16 points to lead Republic. She was the only Lady Tiger in double figures.
Hannah Collins scored 21 points for Kickapoo to lead all scorers. Katrice Jackson and Chloe Merced scored 12 each.
Republic falls to 2-6. The Lady Tigers are off until the Pink & White Lady Classic after Christmas.
