Republic Honors Four All-Staters

Four of Republic’s best-ever have been honored in halftime ceremonies during the past couple of weeks. Brooke Stanfield, Jerney Jones, Philip Canfield, and Skyler Hale were recognized for their all-state honors. Below are the scripts detailing their accomplishments on the field in past seasons.

Philip Canfield

Philip Canfield is a 2016 graduate and is the son of David and Jacinda Canfield. Philip is one of the top distant runners in school history. He participated in both track and cross country.

During his senior year in track, Philip finished 3rd in the Conference in the 3200 Meter Run and finished 6th in the 1600 Meter run. At Districts and Sectionals, he finished 3rd in the 3200 Meter run and qualified for the State Meet in Jefferson City. At state, against very tough competition, Philip finished All State with a 6th place finish.

Philip also excelled all four years of his career in cross country. He finished 3rd in the Conference Championships both his junior and senior years and he had top 10 finishes in Districts during his final two seasons. Philip was one of the top runners in the area as demonstrated by finishing in the top 5 at 15 of his 20 meets during his junior and senior years. Philip was a dedicated runner who trained relentlessly for one of our most demanding sports. Philip is attending Central Missouri University and is majoring in aviation with the intention of becoming a commercial airline pilot.

Skyler Hale

Skyler Hale is a 2016 graduate and is the son of Jason and Crystal Hale. Skylar was a three-year starter on the offensive line. He was named All Conference both his junior and senior years. He was also selected to the Southwest Missouri Football Coaches Association Team as a junior and senior. He helped anchor an offensive line that finished 2nd All Time in the State for rushing in a game with 664 yards vs. Glendale in the District Semi-Finals in 2015. As a senior, Skyler helped lead the Tigers to the District Championship game. Following his senior year, Skyler was named to the prestigious All Ozarks Team. He was also selected 1st Team All State as an offensive lineman.

Jerney Jones

Jerney Jones is a 2016 graduate and the son of Brian and Lisa Jones. To say Jerney was a standout in football and track would be an understatement. He was simply one of the best athletes in school history.

In football, Jerney was a two-year starter. He was named All Conference and named to the Southwest Missouri Football Coaches Association First Team both his junior and senior years. As a senior, he was named COC Offensive Player of the Year and was named to the All Ozarks First Team. He was named 1st Team All-State as a running back. He is arguably the top running back in school history as he has set several school and state records. He was the type of runner that just never seemed to go down. He had incredible balance, speed, and a will to gain every yard possible. He owns school records for single season rushing yards (1,817), single season scoring with 30 touchdowns and 180 points, single game rushing yards 422, and single game scoring with 7 TDs and 42 points. He is tied for 3rd in state history with 7 touchdowns in a game and 7th in state history with 447 rushing yards in a game.

Not only was he one of the top running backs in the state, but he also excelled in track as a three-year letterman. During his junior and senior years, he was crowned the Conference Champion in the 100 meter dash and the long jump. He also was a member of the 4 x 100 meter relay team that qualified for State. He was crowned the Class 4 State Champion in the long jump as a junior. While dealing with injuries, he finished 5th at State in the long jump as a senior. He owns the school record in the long jump at 22 feet six inches. He was also a member of the 4 x 100 relay team which holds the school record at 43.51 seconds. Jerney was simply one of the best jumpers and sprinters to ever where a Tiger track jersey. Jerney is currently attending the University of Missouri where he is a member of the football team and he is majoring in Business Administration.

Brooke Stanfield

Brooke Stanfield is a 2016 Graduate and is the daughter of Ron and Tilesha Stanfield. She is one of the most successful and decorated athletes in school history. She participated in volleyball, basketball, and track all four years of her career. She was a fierce competitor who helped lead her teams to great success. Brooke was a three-year starter in basketball and led the Lady Tigers to an impressive overall record of 73-12. She was part of three conference championships and three district championships. She also lead the Lady Tigers to two state quarterfinal appearances. She was a three time, All Conference player and a three time, All District performer. Following both her Junior and Senior years, she was named COC conference co-player of the year. She was named to the prestigious All Ozarks team following her junior and senior years. Brook was named to the All State team three times in basketball. She was named 2nd team All State as a sophomore. As a junior and senior, she was named Class 5 First Team All State. Brooke also holds the school record for free throws in a single game at 16.

Brooke was All Conference and All District in multiple events every year she participated. She is the only track athlete in school history to qualify for state in four different individual events in the same year. She holds several school records and conference records in the 200, 400, and high jump. Her school records include the 200 meters at 25.7, the 400 meters at 58.21, and the high jump record at 5’5 ¼. She was named All State in the high jump three straight years at the state meet. If not for an injury her senior year, she would have been All State in track all four years.

Her athletic excellence was also displayed for the Lady Tigers in volleyball. She was a three time, All Conference player and was named All District and All Region as a senior. She helped lead the Lady Tigers to district championships her sophomore and senior years.

Athletic Director Greg Garton is quoted as saying, “Brooke is simply one of the greatest athletes, male or female, to ever represent Republic High School. It was a joy to watch her compete at such a high level during her career. Not only did she play three sports, but she excelled at all of them. She is a great role model for our kids. Not only did she perform at a high level in athletics, but she was a standout in the classroom as demonstrated by her overall grade point average of 4.4” As a testament to Brooke’s athleticism, she was a finalist for the Sports Zone One Awards and last year was named the Southwest Missouri News-Leader Female Athlete of the Year.

Brooke is currently attending Drury University, where she is a member of the basketball team and is also planning to participate in track this spring. She is majoring in Exercise Physiology and Spanish.
