Republic hit Buffalo with the flurry of 15 straight points midway through the first quarter, and that ended up being the difference in the game. The Lady Tigers never could pull away, but held on for an 81-67 win over Buffalo at the Bolivar tournament Monday.
“We had some moments where we’d go on a run, but then we’d let them right back in the game,” says coach Kris Flood.
The game was played at a frantic pace on both ends of the floor. Republic scored 25 points in the first quarter and led 25-15 after one. The Lady Tigers led 45-31 at halftime and stretched to lead to 20 points at one time. But Buffalo managed to fire back, keeping the game close most of the way. Flood is concerned that his team’s defense has been sub-par for the past two games.
“We’re not doing a very good job defensively. It’s things that are correctable, but we need to get it corrected now before it becomes a thing that ends up costing us somewhere down the line,” Flood says. “That’s what we’re trying to emphasize.”
Brooke Stanfield had a big game on the inside for the Lady Tigers. She ended with 22 points, including eight free throws in 11 attempts. She scored four straight points after Buffalo had cut the lead to ten in the fourth quarter, including a key offensive rebound that led to a foul and two free throws.
Jordan Kabetske scored 17 points. Alexis Ladwig had 12. Taylor Fergen scored 10. Brylee Argo had eight. Jade Sawyer and Allyson Barrett scored five apiece, and Logan Flood added two.
Republic improves to 14-1. They take on Aurora at Bolivar Tuesday night.
Republic’s JV team won their game against Camdenton 66-12.
