Republic opened its wrestling season with the team championship at the Bolivar Invitational Tournament Saturday. Republic scored 172 points as a team, far outdistancing runner-up Springdale Har-Ber, who finished second with 139. School of the Osage took third with 125 team points.
The day featured two individual championships for the Tigers: Hunter Powell in the 113-pound weight class and Cody Sandridge at 152 pounds. In all, Republic placed 12 wrestlers in the top eight of their weight class, and ten of those wrestlers were in the top four.
Freshman Devon Owen was among the Tigers with a runner-up finish. So was Ian Malone, Austin Noblitt, Zach Dickens, and Zac Crowley.
Johnathan Beckett and Shayne Piles finished third. Brandon O’Connell took fourth, Christian Richardson was fifth, and Deric Woodman took eighth in his weight class.
