Republic used an 8-0 run to close out the 3rd quarter to help put away a pesky Springfield Central team Tuesday, 61-40. Cody Geiger scored 20 points, 14 of them in the 1st half, to lead the Tigers.
Republic looked like it would run away with the game at halfime, leading 35-17. But the Tigers offense went cold for the first six minutes of the 3rd quarter, as Central closed the gap to 37-28 with 1:58 left to go. That’s when Trevyor Fisher called a time out.
“To be honest with you, I didn’t say a word. I put it all on the seniors. They knew what needed to be done,” says coach Trevyor Fisher. “It wasn’t trying to reinvent the wheel, it’s just a matter of being strong with the ball and doing the things we talk about every single day, so I let them handle it.”
The strategy worked. The Tigers came out of the time out and scored the next eight points, running their lead to 45-28 going into the final quarter. From there, the game was never seriously in doubt.
Besides Geiger’s 20, the Tigers got 12 points from Marcus Miller, nine from Canyon Smith, and eight from Ty Abney.
The win puts the Tigers’ record at 17-2 as they head into conference play. They’ll open up at Webb City Friday night, and Fisher says the Tigers will have their hands full.
“It was nice to get the win, but at the same time, we’ve got a lot of things to work on before Friday. Webb City’s obviously very good. We’ll have to match their intensity, their physicalness, and it will be a tough one going on the road.”
