Off the Field: FFA to Host Leadership Development; Seeks Judges

Republic High School will host its Fifth Annual Leadership Development Event (LDE) practice competition for FFA students on March 4.

“I enjoy LDEs because it allows me to create a family,” said Republic FFA member Claire Prevo. “I spent every day with these girls, along with most weekends. I was a part of Agriculture sales. We put our own spin on this contest and put forth that girls were in charge of our business. We won first at District and qualified for State after.”

The event is southwest Missouri’s only comprehensive practice competition for FFA members preparing for district, area and state leadership contests. It offers students feedback across all LDE categories, including public speaking, employment skills, parliamentary procedure, and extemporaneous speaking.

“Through these contests we are learning life skills,” said Republic FFA member Melaina Thiltgen. “Public speaking is essential in all parts of life. No matter what career path is chosen, these contests also teach the importance of clear communication, being confident, and how to effectively solve any problems that may come up.”

Advisor Alec Hagan said the event is an important part of preparing for competition later in the spring.

“Without practice LDE events, students would only compete at contests that determine if they move on to the next level,” said Hagan. “This gives them the chance to get feedback and improve their performance.”

Thiltgen, who competes in Food Science, said the competitions combine career development and leadership skills. “These contests forced me to push myself, and in turn, I became comfortable talking in front of a group of people,” she said. “This… also pushed me to better think on my feet and in high-pressure situations.”

The experience creates lasting connections among participants. “I got to enjoy the presence of many other people and chapters,” Prevo said. “We often spent long periods of time in… contest rooms. I now cherish these friendships in many other contests and events we attend.”

The school is currently seeking judges to provide feedback to contestants. You can sign up here.
