Nixa turned a two-score game into a runaway in less than a minute of the third quarter, scoring on a 30-yard touchdown pass and a pick-six 47 seconds apart on the way to a 49-6 win over Republic Friday night.

Both teams came in 2-0, with Nixa ranked second in Class 6 and Republic third in Class 5. This one belonged to the Eagles, who needed only 32 offensive snaps to pile up 362 yards — more than 11 per play — while Republic’s three turnovers kept wiping out its best chances.

“They won up front,” said Republic coach Ryan Cornelsen. “My defensive plan wasn’t very good, obviously. At times it was execution, at times the plan wasn’t very good, so some of that’s on me.”

Nixa quarterback Adam McKnight had a hand in four touchdowns. He capped the Eagles’ opening drive with a four-yard scoring run, then added a six-yard touchdown two possessions later — set up when Nolan Lashley’s 11-yard run ended in a fumble at the Republic 41. That made it 14-0 after one quarter.

Republic’s offense moved the ball much of the night, but couldn’t capitalize. The Tigers drove 14 plays to the Nixa 19 on their second possession but turned it over on downs. In the second quarter, they put together a nine-play, 49-yard drive, and Lashley scored from four yards out to cut the lead to 14-6 with 2:25 left in the half. The margin didn’t survive to the break. McKnight ripped off a 63-yard run on the next possession and finished the drive with a one-yard sneak with 10 seconds on the clock, sending Nixa to halftime up 21-6.

“We had a lot of things not go our way first half, and with three minutes to go or something like that, we’re down 14-6, and I’m like, keep battling,” Cornelsen said. “But when the train got off the tracks there in the second half, man, it just snowballed on us.”

Nixa opened the second half with a three-play drive, finished by McKnight’s 30-yard touchdown pass to Jax Adams. On Republic’s second snap of the answering possession, Chris Henegar intercepted Cooper Cornelsen and returned it for a touchdown. In 47 seconds, the game went from 21-6 to 35-6.

Republic responded with its longest drive of the night — 21 plays, more than 11 minutes of clock — and came away with nothing, when Bryx Lincoln intercepted a Brennan Overstreet pass at the goal line. Nixa needed one play to answer: an 87-yard touchdown run by Adams. Joshua Ford added a 24-yard scoring run midway through the fourth to close it out.

“First half, we played together. We didn’t play well, but we played together, and we were in it,” Cornelsen said. “Second half, we played as individuals and kind of went rogue, and you saw what happened.”

The final stats tell an unusual story. Republic ran 70 plays to Nixa’s 32, held the ball for more than 34 minutes, and picked up 21 first downs to the Eagles’ 12. But the Tigers went 0-for-4 passing with two interceptions, lost a fumble, and never found the big play — their longest gain of the night went for 26 yards. Lashley finished with 108 yards on 26 carries, and Keiran Govan added 84 yards on 10.

McKnight ran for 118 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries, and completed five of six passes for 119 yards. Adams gained 88 yards on six carries.

“I told the kids, this isn’t our first butt kicking, and it probably won’t be our last. What we do next week coming back, it determines what kind of person we are, what kind of character we have,” Cornelsen said. “Anytime you get beat like that in a big game, it’s embarrassing. It’s no fun. But it’s game three. We’ve got to be better next week, and we’ll come back to work Sunday and do everything we can to be better.”

Nixa improves to 3-0. Republic, now 2-1, gets a chance to respond at home next Friday against Ozark.
