The Republic Lady Tigers stayed within striking distance for a half, but top-seeded Strafford took control with a decisive third quarter to pull away for a 59–30 win in the Pink & White Lady Classic semifinals Monday at the O’Reilly Family Event Center.
Facing the state-ranked Indians for the second time in 11 days, Republic looked to reverse a 17-point loss from December 18. Playing without starter Cora Cutbirth, the Lady Tigers relied on defense to keep the game close early despite offensive struggles.
Strafford jumped out to a 13–2 lead, but Republic’s defense clamped down in the second quarter. The Lady Tigers held Strafford scoreless for a significant stretch and pieced together a 5–0 run, cutting the lead to 15–11 on baskets by Addie Brown and Kinley Kilburn.
That was as close as Republic would get. Strafford scored the final five points of the half to take a 20–11 lead into the break, then seized control immediately when play resumed.
The Indians put together a 14–0 run in the third quarter, turning a nine-point game into a 40–16 rout. Strafford outscored Republic 22–9 in the third quarter, fueled by transition buckets and offensive rebounds.
Elsie Larsen led four Indians in double figures with 14 points. Kinley Larsen scored 12, and Blair Bough and Trista VanHorn added 11 each.
Kinley Kilburn led Republic with eight points. Paelyn Gilmore finished with six, while Charlie Hagewood and Josie Stalzer added five apiece.
Republic (5-2) drops to the third-place game Tuesday at O’Reilly. They will face West Plains at 4:00 p.m.
