The Republic tennis team has split a pair of matches this week, falling to Ozark 5-4 on Tuesday before bouncing back with a 9-0 sweep of Carthage on Wednesday.
Against Ozark, Republic claimed victories in three singles matches and one doubles match. Lucas Riffe won 8-3 at No. 1 singles, Gavin Collyott took an 8-6 victory at No. 2 singles, and Nico Lugli won 8-4 at No. 6 singles. In doubles, the No. 1 team of Riffe and Collyott won 8-3.
“Although there were some bright spots, this was not our best effort,” said coach David Smashey. “Losing 2 and 3 doubles put us in a hole that we couldn’t climb out of. All of our singles matches were winnable, but we only ended up winning three of the six.”
Republic rebounded Wednesday with a dominant performance against Carthage, winning all nine matches. The Tigers implemented new doubles pairings for the match, with Nathan Henry teaming with Andrew McCord at No. 2 doubles for an 8-1 win, while Cooper Choate and Lugli combined for an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles.
“The two new doubles pairings both played very well together,” Smashey said.
In singles play, Riffe and McCord both won 8-0 at No. 1 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Lugli also posted an 8-0 shutout at No. 6 singles.
“A very disciplined and efficient win over a COC West and District opponent,” Smashey said.
