Republic Drops Tournament Opener to Battle

Columbia Battle jumped on Republic early and never looked back, cruising to a 12-2 victory in six innings to open the Smith-Cotton Tournament Thursday in Warrensburg.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Battle blew the game open with a five-run second frame. The middle innings stayed quiet before Battle sealed the win with a six-run sixth inning.

Republic starting pitcher Ryder Davis worked five innings, allowing six runs on seven hits while striking out five. Battle continued its attack against relief pitcher Ryder Smith, scoring six runs in just two-thirds of an inning in the sixth.

Jackson Overstreet and Preston McCracken each led Republic’s offense with 2-for-3 performances. McCracken scored a run, while Brennan Overstreet drove in a run and scored another. The Tigers managed seven hits but struggled to string them together for a big inning.

Battle’s Tyler Putnam did damage with his bat, collecting two doubles and three RBIs. Jack Putnam earned the win on the mound, going the distance and limiting Republic to two runs.

The loss drops Republic to 8-6. The Tigers have lost four of their last five. Battle improves to 6-5 on the season.

Republic continues tournament play Friday with games against Lone Jack and Warrensburg.
