Republic Puts the Squeeze on Carthage in Defensive Showdown

Republic’s defense stifled Carthage in a 39-24 victory Friday night. The Lady Tigers held Carthage to single digits in all four quarters while controlling the rebounding battle.

Both teams started slowly, with the score tied 5-5 after one quarter. Republic pulled ahead in the second period, allowing just four points while building a 15-9 halftime advantage.

Republic extended its lead in the third quarter, outscoring Carthage 12-6 to take a 27-15 lead into the final period.

Lanney Strong scored 13 points to lead Republic. Lexa Youngblood led Carthage with 11 points.

Republic won the battle on the boards, holding a 14-7 rebounding edge in the first half alone.

“I thought we were good at things we could control and did a good job defensively,” said coach Tori Mooneyham. “I thought we blocked out well and they (usually) only got one shot.”

The margin of victory would have been higher if not for Republic’s struggles at the free throw line. They missed 12 free throws, including nine in the fourth quarter when they could have put the game out of reach earlier.
