Off the Field: Students Organize Heart Association 5K Run/Walk Feb. 22

Republic High School seniors Addison Penney and Ashland Schaumann are organizing a 5K run/walk to benefit the American Heart Association on Saturday, February 22. The Heart in Motion 5K and Fun Run starts at noon from Republic High School.

The event is part of their senior project and ties into a new student organization at RHS. Penney and Schaumann founded the American Heart Association Student Chapter this year after receiving the opportunity late last school year.

“Our goal for this club is to build a student group that will help raise awareness for the importance of heart health and fight against heart disease in the community around us,” Schaumann said.

Registration is $25 and includes a t-shirt for those who register by February 9. Registration closes February 17. All proceeds will be donated to the American Heart Association to support research, spread heart health awareness, and fight against heart disease.

The race will follow a route around Republic High School. Volunteers from the school and community will help manage the course and support runners.

“We are working with Superintendent Dr. Pearce, Club Sponsor Mrs. McBroom, the National American Heart Association board, and multiple Republic High School (RHS) students to put this event together,” Penney said. “Every donation counts and is going towards a great cause.”

The 5K is one of several activities planned by the club during February, which is National Heart Health Month. Club members will visit elementary schools to help with Jump Rope for Heart. They’ll also hold a “miracle minute” fundraiser during halftime of a high school basketball game on February 25.

Penney said the run combines community involvement with heart health awareness.

“We decided on a 5K because it is a fun way to get the community together and moving. Staying active is necessary to living a heart healthy life,” she said.

The organizers aim to establish the 5K as a permanent part of Republic’s calendar. “As president and vice president of this club, we are hoping that after we graduate, this club will carry on and continue to not only spread awareness but raise money for the international American Heart Association,” Schaumann said.
