Brenley Hagewood saved his best for last, scoring a career-high 40 points in his final home game as Republic defeated Willard 76-52 Tuesday night. The Tigers recognized five seniors – Hagewood, Ryder Davis, Kaden Howard, CJ Uhl, and Davin Parks – in pregame ceremonies.
Republic took control early, opening a 13-point lead by the end of the first quarter. Willard made four three-pointers in the opening minutes to build a 12-9 lead, but back-to-back threes by Brody Blades gave Republic the lead and they never relinquished it. Hagewood scored 13 points in the opening period, while Blades added nine.
The Tigers continued to build their advantage in the second quarter, with Hagewood adding seven more points and senior CJ Uhl contributing four. By halftime, Republic had stretched its lead to 42-22.
The third quarter belonged entirely to Hagewood, who exploded for 20 points, including three three-pointers. His scoring burst helped Republic outscore Willard 28-15 in the period, pushing the lead to its largest margin at 33 points (70-37).
The seniors started the game, and in the fourth quarter, Brown removed them one by one, with Hagewood being the first to exit. Willard outscored Republic 15-6 in the final period as the Tigers’ regular rotation gave way to reserves.
Hagewood’s 20-point third quarter ties him for 22nd on the Missouri State High School Activities Association online record book for points in a single quarter. After the game, Hagewood deflected attention from his individual accomplishment to focus on his fellow seniors.
“I just wanted all the seniors to do something big,” Hagewood said. “Some got their chance to start for the first time or second time, and I thought that was a big thing. Those are my guys, people I’ve grown up with my whole life.”
Republic coach Tim Brown praised his senior class for their leadership beyond the basketball court.
“It’s a really good group. There’s a reason why you have a program that has success,” Brown said. “They’re all honor students. They’re kids that have been student of the month for Republic. That’s the kind of kids they are.”
Brown also acknowledged Hagewood’s evolution as both a scorer and a leader.
“He’s obviously always had the ability from the first day of high school to put the ball in the goal,” Brown said. “He was a double-digit scorer for us as a freshman, and he’s led us in scoring since his sophomore year. But the leader that he’s evolved into, it’s been fun.”
Senior CJ Uhl finished with 12 points for Republic. Seniors Davis and Parks contributed six points each, and Kaden Howard added one. Dice Andrike led Willard with 13 points, and J.J. Huskisson added 11.
Republic improved to 21-4 this season with one game remaining, on the road at Parkview Friday.
