Brenley Hagewood scored 33 points and Republic never trailed Friday night, picking up its 20th win of the season with a 65-57 victory at Carthage.

Hagewood scored in every quarter and CJ Uhl added 21 points for Republic, which improved to 20-4. The Tigers jumped ahead 11-4 in the first quarter, with Hagewood scoring six points and Uhl adding four during that stretch.

Republic maintained its advantage throughout the second quarter despite Dylan Pugh heating up for Carthage. Pugh scored five points in the period, but Republic’s Ryder Davis knocked down two three-pointers to help Republic take a 26-19 lead into halftime.

Republic stretched the lead to as many as 16 points in the third quarter. Hagewood scored 10 points in the period, including a three-pointer that pushed Republic’s lead to 34-24. By the end of the third quarter, Republic led 45-36.

Carthage made a late push behind Pugh, who scored 10 fourth-quarter points, but Republic sealed the win at the free throw line. Hagewood scored 16 points in the final period, including several crucial free throws down the stretch.

“They’re a tough team to beat, and they create a lot of different matchups with their ability to shoot the basketball from about five spots, and you have to guard them for really long possessions,” said coach Tim Brown. “I felt like we guarded them for long, good possessions. I thought our first-shot defense was pretty good.”

Pugh led Carthage with 22 points, including four three-pointers. Kruz Castor added 11 for Carthage, which falls to 14-10.

Republic hosts Willard for Senior Night Tuesday.
