Rogersville built an early lead and maintained it throughout, defeating Republic 61-50 in the second round of the Pink & White Tournament on Thursday.
The Lady Wildcats jumped ahead 19-9 in the first quarter, and though Republic played evenly the rest of the way, the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
“It’s hard to beat a good team when you constantly have to play from behind,” Republic coach Tori Mooneyham said. “The first quarter has been a huge issue for us. We played evenly the other quarters. We just have to fix the things we can be better at.”
Lanney Strong led Republic with a career-high 26 points. Awbree Berning added 12 to join Strong in double figures.
Eden Kibby paced Rogersville with 17 points. Hailey Buckman scored 12 and Reagan Rasmussen finished with 10.
After the opening quarter, both teams matched each other nearly point for point. Rogersville outscored Republic 15-14 in the second quarter, and Republic outscored Rogersville 14-13 in the third. Rogersville won the fourth quarter scoring battle, 14-13.
