Brenley Hagewood put together the highest-scoring performance by a Republic player in nearly three years, pouring in 37 points in the Tigers’ 68-53 road win at Hillcrest Tuesday. His total fell just two points shy of Drew McMillin’s 39-point mark set against Joplin in February 2021.
With Republic trailing 14-8 late in the first quarter, Hagewood sparked a 15-0 run that changed the game’s momentum. He scored 15 points in the second quarter alone as Republic outscored Hillcrest 21-6 to build a 32-20 halftime lead.
“I just knew I needed to attack them,” Hagewood said. “I knew that if I kept attacking them, I knew that I could possibly get fouls, get my teammates open. Things just happen if I’m attacking.”
Hagewood’s scoring came from all areas of the floor, including five three-pointers. When Hillcrest mounted a fourth-quarter comeback to cut the lead to nine points, he helped seal the victory with 11 points in the final frame.
His 37-point outburst in a key road victory is our Performance of the Week.
