Both Republic coach Ryan Cornelsen and Helias coach Chris Hentges have deep football roots in their families, with fathers honored in their respective halls of fame. Gary Cornelsen won four state titles at Liberal High School in Kansas, appearing in seven consecutive state championship games. Ray Hentges, father of Helias head coach Chris Hentges, won two state titles at Helias. Beyond football, Gary Cornelsen won 24 track championships and Ray Hentges won three golf championships.
