Republic Wins “Incredible” COC Tennis Match at Willard

Coach David Smashey called it an “incredible match—one of the best tennis matches I’ve ever been a part of.” And when it was over, Republic had secured a nail-biting 5-4 decision over Central Ozark Conference rival Willard.

Eva Riley clinched the win for Republic in the No. 5 singles match, defeating Willard’s Hadley McNatt 8-6. “Both players were exhausted at the end, but neither one would give in,” Smashey said. “Eva just made one more big shot than her opponent.”

Republic swept all three doubles matches to start strong. Freshman Paelyn Kaufmann and junior Mati Carpenter staged a comeback in No. 1 doubles, winning 9-8 (7-3).

“Paelyn played with great poise while … Mati Carpenter really took control of the match down the stretch,” Smashey said. “Her decision-making was really sophisticated.”

Ella Lashley and Aubree Tinsley won No. 2 doubles 8-3, while Payton Schroeder and Brooklyn Douglas took No. 3 doubles by the same score.

In singles, Schroeder won convincingly at No. 3, 8-4. “Payton was just hitting bombs and making people smile watching her play,” Smashey said.

Willard fought back, winning three close singles matches to level the overall score at 4-4, setting up Riley’s decisive victory with both teams and their fans gathered around the court.

“I think we’re starting to develop an identity as a team — excellent, aggressive doubles and willingness to fight and compete in our singles,” Smashey said.

The win evens Republic’s record at 1-1 for the season. The Lady Tigers return to action Thursday, hosting Carthage.
