The Columbia Hickman Kewpies defeated Republic 4-2 at the Jefferson City Shootout on Saturday, ending the Lady Tigers’ 10-game winning streak.
Hickman took a 1-0 lead with 33:43 left in the first half on a penalty kick after a foul was called during a corner kick. The Kewpies increased their lead to 2-0 with 5:43 remaining in the half when they intercepted a pass and scored on a one-on-one opportunity against Republic goalkeeper Awbree Berning.
In the second half, Hickman made it 3-0 with 25:05 remaining. A foul at midfield led to a free kick, which Hickman’s kicked into the box, resulting in a goal.
Republic cut the lead to 3-1 almost immediately after that, with 24:36 left, when Cam Burton passed to Molly Blades, who beat a defender and scored.
The Lady Tigers made it 3-2 with 9:35 remaining when Kaylee Cornelsen converted a penalty kick after a foul was called against Hickman in the box.
Hickman scored with eight seconds left to make the final score 4-2.
The loss ended Republic’s school-record 10-game winning streak, which included a 2-0 win over Capital City High School on Friday. During the streak, the Lady Tigers outscored their opponents 43-7 and recorded seven shutouts.
Republic now has a 14-5 record. The Lady Tigers’ 14 wins are the most since 2019 when they finished 16-9. The Lady Tigers host Nixa Tuesday.
