Skyline Tops Republic in Pink & White

Republic finished the Pink & White Tournament with a loss to Skyline in the fifth-place game at Weiser Gymnasium Saturday, 53-41. (Scroll down for photos.)

In the opening minutes, Skyline knocked Republic off balance by out-scrapping the Lady Tigers, getting to loose balls and grabbing offensive boards that led to second- and third-chance points. With turnovers ending Republic’s possessions prematurely, Republic took fewer than five shots during the first five minutes of the game. At the end of the first quarter, Skyline had built an 18-12 lead with the help of a nine-point quarter by Kenzi Cheek.

In the second quarter, Republic switched defenses, with Gracie Woods shadowing Cheek to shut her down. That plan worked, with Cheek scoring only two points on a put-back in the second quarter — but Cheek’s teammates picked up the slack and Skyline’s defense continued to excel. Skyline outscored Republic in all four quarters, with the lead never shrinking below six points in the second half.
