Republic recognized ten seniors, then won all nine varsity matches in a 9-0 sweep of Webb City Thursday. Senior Night festivities centered on seniors Grace Replogle, Monica Henry, Chloe McCann, Lilly Carlo, Katie Teeter, Mari Davidson, Elli Woodward, Caroline Wilson, Katie Barton, and Alivia Coleman. Coach David Smashey praised them for their participation in some of Republic tennis’s most successful years.
“This senior class has been integral to all the major moments and developments in our program over the last four years,” Smashey said. He pointed out they were freshmen who showed up frequently when courts re-opened after Covid shutdowns. They were also on the squad when Republic’s varsity team made the final four for the first time.
When they were sophomores, Republic went undefeated in the Central Ozark Conference. That perfect COC season included a 5-4 win over Carl Junction when younger players were pressed into action because all but one of the varsity players were quarantined. “Several of them were the JV players who played varsity that night and won huge matches for us,” he said.
“The last two years, they have taken on leadership roles on our team and have helped create an open and welcoming team culture where new players feel welcome and valued. On the court, their depth of talent and experience has made us competitive with every team in the area,” Smashey continued. “As people, this group is remarkable. I’ve never been around a group that is more generous and gracious to their teammates, fellow students, coaches, and opponents. I look forward to seeing these young women impact their community with their talent, character, and willingness to serve others.”
Republic’s 9-0 night included a win by Eva Riley, playing at the #5 slot. She was #11 on Republic’s depth chart, but after being pressed into action because of illness, she won her match 8-4.
The win helps Republic rebound after losses to Carl Junction and Nixa earlier in the week. The Lady Tigers improve to 6-4 this season.
