Santino Stiglianese’s four-goal performance propelled Republic soccer to a 5-1 win against Springfield Central at the Lake Country Soccer complex on Thursday. William Pinnell also scored.
Springfield Central was the first to score, finding the net 13 minutes, 18 seconds into the game. Republic equalized with five minutes, 32 seconds left in the first half and dominated the second half.
“(In the) second half, we had four goals and started to relax and be more composed on the ball,” said Republic coach Jesus Zuniga.
Republic experimented with a new formation early in the game, leading to a slow start. “We tried a new formation early in the game to adapt to our strengths and it didn’t benefit us entirely,” Zuniga noted.
Goalkeeper Xavier Ulshafer made two crucial saves that were key to Republic’s success. “Xavier had two saves that kept us in it, but it’s great to see the boys smiling and having fun,” Zuniga said. The Tigers had lost a 1-0 match in overtime to Carl Junction Tuesday.
“A win is a win, and we will take it after a loss. Just felt great to see the ball hit the back of the net again,” Zuniga added.
Republic is 6-4, and has won five of its last six. A game against Central Ozark Conference rival Nixa looms Tuesday, followed by a game at Monett Thursday, and the Kickapoo Tournament Friday and Saturday. The Tigers will play four games in six days, all against quality opponents.
“There’s something different about this group. I’ll take them over any group any day,” Zuniga said. “Next week is the challenge I’ve been waiting for to see how we handle adversity.”
