The Republic Tiger community will rally around Todd Smith, a longtime teacher and coach, at a fundraiser Sunday at Republic Middle School. The Tough for Todd 7-on-7 Flag Football Tournament will raise money for Smith’s battle against pancreatic cancer.
Brooke Ward, a family friend, brought the idea for the fundraiser to Todd’s sister, Tammy Watkins. “Todd has been a mentor, role model, and friend to so many people throughout his coaching career,” Watkins said. “People want to give back, it’s truly been a blessing to our family. It has been humbling.”
Ten adult teams and two youth teams will compete in the tournament, starting at 10 a.m. Sunday morning. With an admission fee of $2, the event aims to be accessible to everyone who wants to contribute. Limited concessions will be available for attendees, and a 50/50 raffle, as well.
It’s been especially gratifying for the family to see how many of the young adults who were influenced by Smith have come together.
“There are a couple of teams comprised of Todd’s past players,” Watkins said. “Not only will we raise some funds for his fight against pancreatic cancer, we will enjoy a great day of fun and create some great memories.”
